Both Maryland and Virginia are great winery destinations along the east coast.

Maryland is home to over 80 wineries. Many of these wineries are located in Central Maryland, in an area known as the Piedmont Plateau.

Virginia is home to over 300 wineries! Many Virginia wineries are in northern Virginia and are just a few hours’ drive from Washington, D.C. Many of the other great wineries in Virginia are located in either the Shenandoah Valley or near Charlottesville, VA.

The colorfully named Great Frogs Winery is conveniently located near Annapolis, Md, which is about halfway between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

They have many notable and award-winning wines, including their 2015 Great Frogs Red Wine, 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2016 Great Frogs Chardonnay.

The winery has wine flights that include six wines.

Great Frogs has both an indoor and outdoor area for seating. It is recommended that you call ahead of time to reserve indoor seating.

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is one of the most convenient vineyards to get to in the DC area. It is just 37 miles northwest of DC.

Sugarloaf offers wine flights of four select wines.

Please note that the vineyard has limited indoor seating. Most of the seating is outside. They have an outside tasting tent for weekend tastings. Weekday tastings take place indoors.

They are open year-round, and have a fire pit for outdoor seating during the winter!

The vineyard sells packaged cheeses and charcuterie, and there is a food truck onsite on weekends. You can also bring your own picnic.

6. Rocklands Farm Winery

Rocklands Farm Winery is located just 22 miles from Washington, D.C. near the Potomac River. This makes it one of my favorite wineries near Washington, D.C.!

Rocklands doesn’t require reservations, but you can make fire pit or indoor barn reservations online.

The winery features a 3- or 6-wine flight, or wine by the glass or bottle.

Rocklands also offers tours every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm from April to November. The 45-minute tour will take you behind the scenes to learn more about how the wine is made!

The winery hosts live local music every Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Rocklands has both a wine club and a meat club that you can join. As part of the meat club, you will get a selection of grass-fed and grass-finished beef, lamb, poultry, pork, bones for broth-making, and more.

Food

The winery sells local snacks, such as cheese, charcuterie, crackers, dips, and more. You can find a full menu online. You can also bring your own picnic.

Barboursville Vineyard

Barboursville dates all the way back to 1821. You will definitely want to take your time exploring the surrounding area as well, which is filled with historic buildings and ruins. A short walk down the road from the main building will lead you to the Landmark Ruins.
