Hampton, VA is located in the southeastern tidewater region of Virginia. It is situated on a peninsula between the James River and the Chesapeake Bay. It is also the seventh-largest city in Virginia.

The larger Hampton Roads area comprises the nearby metropolitan areas of Hampton, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News.

Description

St. George Brewing Company actually got its start in 1998 in Virginia Beach. It is now one of the top spots for great beer in Hampton, VA. It is also one of the first micro-breweries in Virginia.

Their year-long beers on tap include an English IPA, Golden Ale, Nut Brown Ale, Pilsner, and Honey Meade Lager.

They also feature seasonal beers, such as Oktoberfest, Slumbering Dragon (Scotch Ale), and Hibiscus Pale Ale in fall.

Their specialty beers include Raging Goats Imperial Amber Bock, Dragon’s Fury (Double IPA), Hazy Dragon IPA, and Russian Imperial Stout.

A special bonus of the brewery is that they have their own Apiary on the property. Here they have bee hives that support the local bee population. The brewery’s Honey Meade Lager was made from the honey in the hives!

The brewery has several indoor seating in their taproom, as well as outdoor space, including a tented patio that is open year-round.

Description

Bold Mariner Brewing Company was founded by a Navy veteran. It is located about 10 miles southeast of Hampton in nearby Norfolk, VA. It is near the coast not far from the Chesapeake Bay.

The brewery features a list of Pilsners, IPAs, and Lagers on tap. They also have a Sour-Fruited Gose with dragonfruit, guava, and pineapple. They also feature some unique and tasty brews such as the Noser (brown ale with pecans and vanilla), and they have a special strawberry cider.

Bold Mariner also has trivia nights on Thursdays at 6:30 pm.

Food

Pleasure House Brewing is located a little further afield in Virginia Beach, about a 30-minute drive southeast of Hampton. The brewery is a local favorite and prides itself on a fun and social atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

The brewery focuses on small-batch brews. They also frequently rotate their beers, so you are likely to find completely different brews on tap with every visit.

Some of their most popular beers include Glo (a Belgian Style Blond Ale), Liquid Communication (a Belgian Tripel), and O’Brien Clan (Irish Red).

Other drinks include Shark Tears (Sour – Traditional Gose), Tricks (Pumpkin/Yam Beer), and House of Pleasures Ginger Lime Seltzer.

Aleworks Brewing Company is located in Williamsburg, about 36 miles northwest of Hampton. They are one of the major local breweries in the state. One of their most famous brews is the Pumpkin Ale, which is popular in the fall.

Some of their craft brews on tap include the Chesapeake Pale Ale, Pumpkin Ale, Suberb IPA, Coffeehouse Stout, and Tangerine Wheat.

Sly Clyde Ciderworks, as the name suggests, focuses on ciders. They make their unique ciders using native Virginian apples. They are located right in Hampton, VA.

They feature traditional ciders, as well as specialty fruit-infused ciders like Lav-iathan (lavender and honey), Inkjet (which is like a blackberry mojito), Carnivale (apricot and honey), and Sandbar (raspberry and lemon).

Other drinks include the Guava Sunrise Sour, and a large number of specialty ciders, including Strawberry Rhubarb Bar, Ambrosia, and Apparition (which has pumpkin, spices, and brown sugar for a special fall treat).

The brewery also hosts private events in one of multiple spaces, including The Blind (which has a capacity of 89), The Lounge (with a capacity of 20), and The Tasting Room (with a capacity of 125). Some of the spaces include private restrooms, tap lines, and even a projector and stage!

The Virginia Beer Company is in Williamsburg, about a 30 minute drive from Hampton.

They specialize in testing new beers with unique flavors, such as English Pale Ales and Spiced Milk Stouts. Some of their other beers include Oatmeal Stout, Citrus Wheat, and Peach Sour Ale. They tend to rotate the beers frequently, and so there is often something new to try on tap.
