Virginia is dominated by gorgeous mountains and valleys in the western part of the state. One of the best ways to experience this beautiful region is to stay in a cabin!

Cabins in the Virginia mountains come in all different varieties, ranging from luxury cabins, to romantic cabins, to rustic and primitive cabins that may not even have running water.

Booking a stay in a cabin can be a perfect way to get even closer to nature. Cabins are often much more secluded and private compared to staying at a hotel or motel.

You can stay at a cabin, chill in a hot tub on the deck, roast marshmallows on a fire pit in the backyard, or sit on the porch and watch deer wander through the woods. It’s truly a magical experience!

Depending on what kind of cabin experience you’re looking for, from rustic to luxury and everything in between, I have all my top recommendations for you below!

Cozy Cabins

Cozy cabins fill that sweet spot between luxury cabins and rustic cabins. You can find adorable log cabins that are filled with charm and character.

Cozy cabins usually have most of the amenities you’d need, including a full kitchen, but they may have less space and less luxury amenities like a private hot tub that you’d find at a more upscale cabin.

Lydia Mountain Lodge and Log Cabins (Standardsville, VA)

For those seeking a cozy log cabin with a great location, Lydia Mountain Lodge and Log Cabins is an excellent choice!

Rustic Cabins (including State Park Cabins)

If you’re looking for a more rustic or even primitive cabin, then Virginia State Parks can be a great option. They’re affordable and provide you with easy access to some of the best hiking trails, lakes, and wildlife that the state has to offer!

There are a handful of state parks in the mountains that have cabin rentals.

Claytor Lake State Park (Dublin, VA)

Claytor Lake State Park is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern Virginia. It’s about an hour away from Roanoke.

As you can imagine, Claytor Lake is the centerpiece of the park. The 4,500 acre lake is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, or just relaxing and taking in the peaceful water views.

The park also features 7 miles of hiking and biking trails.

The cabins are best described as rustic. They have heating and A/C, plus utensils in the kitchens, but you have to bring your own food, linens, and soap. The cabins also have a fireplace and fire pit.

If you want a unique, even more rustic experience, you can check out renting a yurt, which is a large circular structure that has a bed and living room, but no water or electricity. You can use the campground bathhouse for running water.

Note that there is a six-day minimum stay for the popular summer months.

Hungry Mother State Park (Smythe County, VA)

Hungry Mother State Park is located down in Smythe County in southwest Virginia. The park has a long history and is one of six original state parks in Virginia.

The descriptive name of the park is thought to be derived from a legend of a woman and child who escaped in the woods searching for food. When the mother collapsed, the daughter went searching for help and could only utter the words “hungry mother.” The mother later died at the foot of the mountain.

There is a 108-acre lake in the park, plus beautiful mountain scenery all around. You can go fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, or canoeing on the lake. There are also 17 miles of hiking trails through the park.

The cabins range in size from an efficiency to a 2 bedroom. There are also log cabins in the park for the perfect mountain escape.

The cabins have many of the same amenities as the other state parks, with kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms. As with the other lodgings, you will have to bring food, linens, and soap.

Note that some of the cabins do not have a full kitchen.

Hungry Mother also has three yurts that you can book. Yurts do not have electricity, heat, A/C, or water, but they do have a bed and living area.
