Storybook Elopements at Shadow Mountain Escape

The following is a sponsored post.

Shadow Mountain Escape was already one of my favorite romantic cabin destinations in Virginia, but now they’ve really separated themselves from the crowd by creating special Elopement Packages for couples who are looking for a memorable way to celebrate their special day!

The Elopement Packages are specifically designed for couples who want an intimate, private event to celebrate their nuptials – just the two of you in a magical, storybook setting at Shadow Mountain Escape!

Imagine your wedding celebration by a babbling brook, surrounded by wildflowers right beside Shenandoah National Park. Or in one of the fairytale-like authentic timber frame cabins that are inspired by medieval Europe. Or in the exquisite Stone House, which is patterned after medieval stone structures.

Elopement Packages at Shadow Mountain Escape

The elopement packages at Shadow Mountain Escape are truly unique among wedding sites in Virginia (I don’t know of any other venue that offers them!) and it serves as the perfect, intimate celebration of love.

One of the key features of the elopement packages is that they offer couples an opportunity to have a very private and personal ceremony.

Karen Riddle, who is the co-owner of Shadow Mountain Escape, is a wedding officiant and gifted photographer who hosts unforgettable wedding-elopement ceremonies for couples.

Karen will officiate the service and even serve as official photographer (her photographs are fabulous and can be viewed on Instagram).

The elopement package also includes a dozen roses, chocolates, a small red velvet rose wedding cake, Prosecco, and even vows prepared by Karen (if you choose).

Storybook Elopement Settings at Shadow Mountain Escape

The elopement packages include a wedding ceremony on the sprawling 15-acre property at a location of your choice. This could be the newly constructed and stunning Stone House, the stone courtyard by the Gothic Tower, an outside ceremony by the stream or pond, or at any other location on the property.

The Stone House

The breathtaking Stone House is the perfect setting for the elopement ceremony.

I recently had an opportunity to visit the property and see the Stone House in person, and it left me speechless with the level of craftsmanship and care that was behind each meticulously laid stone.

The Stone House was designed and constructed by Ralph Riddle, who, along with his wife Karen, is the proud owner of Shadow Mountain Escape.

Ralph has a passion for historic construction techniques, which originally led him to design the main residence plus four timber frame cabins that are located on the 15-acre property.

In March 2024, Ralph undertook a very different challenge when he set about constructing a Stone House to serve as a wedding venue for guests. The Stone House took only 11 months to construct and was done almost exclusively by Ralph himself.

The house was designed using only stones from farm walls found on the property. Ralph used medieval techniques in his construction that date back to the castles created in the Middle Ages.

When you walk up to the Stone House and see it in person, you truly appreciate the scale of the task that Ralph undertook. Many of the stones are very large and would have required quite a feat to set for construction of the house.

The interior of the stone house strikes the perfect balance between medieval European character and bright, inviting charm. Your eye is immediately drawn to the immense red and blue-hued Afghan rug that serves as the focal centerpiece of the space.

There is a striking iron chandelier above the center of the room, which anchors the bold oak beams that crisscross against the blue wooden ceiling.

When you look closely, you’ll notice that the oak beams were designed using the timber frame house technique that is a primary characteristic of the entire property. You can even see the large oak pegs that hold the beams together.

The chandelier is festooned with a tangle of white lights that lend the space a warm and magical glow.

At the far end of the stone house, and forming the perfect backdrop for a wedding ceremony, there are two wooden high backed chairs in a medieval style, a large wooden chest, and a table decorated with iron candelabras.

An exquisite, brightly colored stained glass window sits in the center of the back wall, forming an eye-catching centerpiece for any wedding ceremony.

The white plaster walls are decorated with artwork depicting medieval French stained glass, gargoyles, paintings of the Crusades, and European timber frame architecture.

Another striking feature of the Stone House is the large set of solid wood carriage house doors that are located along one of the main walls. These doors can swing outward in dramatic fashion, opening to reveal the beauty of the interior of the Stone House. It forms a grand commencement for an elopement-wedding ceremony!

One of my favorite qualities of the Stone House is the earthy smell that permeates the structure. It feels alive as soon as you walk through the door. This same feeling of living breathes through the Stone House just as completely as it does every timber frame structure at Shadow Mountain Escape.

The attention to detail extends to the outside of the structure, where you can really appreciate the stone masonry up close. There are bold tiles set within the stone walls to add a splash of blue and gold to the exterior. The tiles look as though they were excavated right from an ancient Italian villa.

Another detail worth noting is the fact that the Stone House is anchored by four large stones at each corner. These stones jut outwards, which was the common style of medieval stone construction. Ralph took meticulous care to use these techniques in his design and construction.

The Stone House is surrounded by towering evergreen trees and wildflowers. There is also a charming stream nearby that forms the perfect natural escape.

What really makes the Stone House special is how all of these unique elements come together to form a wedding space that is both intimate and warm, yet pays perfect homage to medieval stone architecture of a distant time and place. It is transportive, magical, utterly unique, and an unforgettable place to celebrate one of the most important days in a couple’s life.

Shadow Mountain Escape has long been a favorite destination for wedding ceremonies. The new Stone House offers a new stunning photography backdrop to mark the occasion.

The Timber Frame Cabins

Guests can also choose to have their ceremony or photographs at one of the four timber frame cabins that dot the property.

Each cabin is unique in design and filled with character. From canopy beds and cozy fireplaces to hand-crafted woodwork and artistic touches, you’ll find warmth and craftsmanship in every detail.

The soaring timber beams are held together with traditional wooden pegs – no nails – creating a space that feels both historic and warm.

The Dragonfly and Bumblebee Cabins are especially spacious, making them ideal for a romantic stay or even a small indoor ceremony.

For lovely mountain views, the private loft in the Observation Tower offers a stunning, light-filled setting surrounded by windows – perfect for wedding portraits or a peaceful moment after “I do.”

The Gothic Tower and Courtyard

Another favorite wedding spot at Shadow Mountain Escape is the striking Gothic Tower and courtyard. The courtyard feels like a secret space, secluded and private. In the winter months, it’s the site for festive evenings with glühwine (German mulled wine) by the fire!

The Gothic Tower is an impressive stone structure that exemplifies the old-world European charm that is found throughout Shadow Mountain Escape.

The Stream and Pond

Shadow Mountain Escape is set in a natural paradise with a babbling brook, wildflowers, and fields around the property. This makes it the perfect backdrop for a picture-perfect wedding.

One of my favorite spots is located near the Stone House: the stream gently cascades over rocks amidst a sea of yellow wildflowers.

There is also a large pond nearby, as well as open fields and wooded areas by the stream, all just steps away from majestic Shenandoah National Park.
