8 Incredible Northern Virginia Resorts

Salamander Middleburg Resort

Salamander Middleburg Resort is one of the premier resorts in Northern Virginia. It’s located in charming Middleburg, VA, which is home to some of the best wineries in the region!

Salamander offers all the amenities you could ask for in a premium resort. The sprawling property includes the fabulous Harriman’s Restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast, dinner, or Sunday brunch.

Their breakfast menu includes decadent dishes like Brioche French Toast, Roasted Pineapple Pancakes, Coconut-Nutella Pancakes, Omelettes, Eggs Benedict, and much more.

For dinner, you’ll find creative fare like Maine Diver Scallops with Romanesco, Hazelnuts, and Domestic Caviar; Grilled Octopus with Spanish Chorizo, Braised Field Peas, Silk Chili, and Chimichurri; and Wagyu filet with Ovaka Farms, Paris, Virginia Creamed Spinach, and Perigord Jus. The menu is centered around local Virginia ingredients.

Salamander even features a Cooking Studio, where you can watch and learn about how the amazing dishes are created, plus you can experience sommelier-led wine tastings.

No resort would be complete without a full-service spa. The spa at Salamander features massages, facials, and body treatments. They also provide very unique treatments that go beyond what you would typically find at a spa. Some of their signature treatments include Sound Therapy and the Grand Cru Massage, which uses a grape seed scrub to help exfoliate the skin.

As I mentioned before, the property is immense, and includes plenty of special activities that will make sure you never want to leave! There are indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, a putting green, an equestrian center, croquet, bocce ball, corn hole, and life-sized chess.

The equestrian center is especially noteworthy. It offers trail rides, riding lessons, horsemanship classes, and much more. A highlight of the center is getting a chance to meet the adorable miniature horse, Cupcake. Make sure you book reservations at the equestrian center at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance!

And if all of this wasn’t enough, Salamander also hosts regular events, including author visits, scavenger hunts, guided hikes, Winery of the Month Tastings, cooking demonstrations, and more.

Landsdowne Resort and Spa

Landsdowne Resort and Spa is another fabulous resort in Northern Virginia. The resort is located near Leesburg, VA and right near the Potomac River. This means it’s just 25 miles from Fairfax.

Golf ball and golf club on golf course

The sprawling 500-acre resort includes everything you could need for a perfect relaxing getaway! There are two golf courses, an Aquatic Complex, a spa, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a fitness center, and multiple restaurants.

If you’re an avid golfer, then Lansdowne is the place for you! The golf course is available for both resort guests and members.

There are also multiple special packages available to combine golf with a luxurious stay at the resort. For instance, you can book the Mulligan Golf Package, which includes accommodations and two days of golf.

For a truly relaxing stay, you can book the Pamper & Putt Package, which includes a round of golf and a 50-minute Swedish massage!

Speaking of massages, Lansdowne naturally has plenty of spa amenities at Spa Minerale. You’ll find all of the most popular massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair treatments. They also offer special couples packages, plus unique spa services like the CBD Gua Sha Facial, Oriental Bodywork Sampling, Stone Crop Revitalizing Wrap and Massage, and much more.

You can find even more ways to unwind thanks to the extra wellness packages at Lansdowne. These packages include group fitness classes, massage treatments at Spa Minerale, a Nightly Herbal Foot Soak, a Respiratory Detox Supplement, and much more.

If you want to spend your time chilling at the pool, then you’re in luck, because Lansdowne actually has four of them! There are three outdoor pools (open seasonally), plus an indoor pool and hot tub. You can also rent a private poolside cabana.

And of course, no resort stay would be complete without fine dining to indulge in every day and night! Lansdowne has multiple restaurants, including Piedmont’s, Coton & Rye, and Riverside Hearth (for lunch and breakfast).

Some of the fabulous entrees to choose from include Lobster and Mushroom Ravioli, Pollo al Marsala, Pan Fried Rainbow Trout, and Cedar Plank Salmon.

Massanutten Resort

Massanutten Resort is a little further away from Northern Virginia in Massanutten, VA, which is near Harrisonburg. It is about a 2-hour drive from Fairfax and includes plenty of top amenities to make it a great choice for a weekend getaway.

The resort is located in the Shenandoah Valley, which means you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous scenery year-round. It’s also a popular ski destination in the winter.

Massanutten is an immense 6,000 acres in size, which means it has plenty of room to explore.

The resort is a great choice for families. They have a playground, a Family Adventure Park (which includes a rope course, zip line, climbing wall, and tubing); plus an indoor and outdoor waterpark onsite.

There are also plenty of outdoor activities nearby, including hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, kayaking, and miniature golf. Plus there’s a game room and arcade on-site.

The indoor waterpark is actually one of the top rated indoor waterparks in the country, which is pretty cool! It includes a water fortress, inflatables, body slides, multiple pools, lazy river floats, a pipeline, and hot tubs, including an adults-only hot tub.

For golf enthusiasts, Massanutten also has two golf courses and a driving range.

When you’re ready to unwind, make sure to stop by the full-service spa. You can book a Therapeutic Bamboo Massage, a Hot Stone Massage, a Swedish Massage, a Sleep Therapy Massage, a Mineral Magnesium Massage, plus facials, body treatments, manicures, pedicures, and more. They also have a dry sauna that you can reserve.

Massanutten has plenty of dining options on-site, though they tend to gear more toward fast food, comfort food, and family-friendly options.

Base Camp is a bar and grill that serves everything from flatbread pizzas, to sandwiches, to steaks, seafood, pasta, and more. You can also head over to the Virginia Barbeque & Pizza Co. for, you guessed it, barbeque and pizza!

The Campfire Grill is a great spot for a filling breakfast. They offer a weekend breakfast buffet with all of your favorites, like bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, grits, fruit, and more.

The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner

The Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner is, as you can imagine, a beautiful luxury hotel in the heart of some of the best shopping and dining in Northern Virginia!

Spa towel, basket, and soap

It’s conveniently located right next to Tysons Corner Center, which is comprised of two major shopping malls (Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria), both of which offer just about any kind of shopping you could be looking for.

Tysons Corner Center has over 300 stores and restaurants, plus an AMC movie theater. Some of the major stores include Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, the Apple Store, American Girl, L.L. Bean, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Michael Kors.

The hotel itself is in a busy area, which means it’s not quite a sprawling resort, but it still has many luxurious resort amenities.

There is naturally a full-service spa, which includes top pampering packages like a Deep Tissue Massage, a Hot Stone Massage, a CBD Renew and Restore Massage, a Champagne & Rose Body Polish, and an Antioxidant Vitamin C Facial. The spa also features additional amenities like an indoor pool, sauna, fitness center, and steam rooms.

As you’d expect from a Ritz-Carlton property, there are also numerous fine dining options, such as Entyse. The menu features creative fine cuisine like a Beetroot and Avocado Tartare, Mediterranean Octopus, Pan Seared Diver Scallops, Rosemary & Citrus Chicken, and Chilean Sea Bass.

Brunch is also served on weekends, with a mouth-watering menu that includes Maine Lobster Benedict, Brioche French Toast, and Smoked Atlantic Salmon.

On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays you can also indulge in Afternoon Tea, with canapés, desserts, a fine tea selection, and piano entertainment.

Hyatt Regency Reston

The Hyatt Regency Reston is the largest luxury hotel in Reston, VA. It’s located in the vibrant Reston Town Center, which will give you easy access to some great shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.

The hotel is also located very close to Dulles International Airport, which can make it convenient for travel.

As a bonus, the Hyatt Regency is located close to the Silver Line of the D.C. metro. You can take the metro to Dulles Airport, Tysons Corner, Arlington, and even Washington, D.C.

The Hyatt doesn’t have quite as many amenities as some of the other properties on this list, but it is still a solid option, particularly because it is located within Fairfax County, which means you’re closer to more of the top attractions in the D.C. metro region.

The hotel itself has a restaurant on-site, The Capital Burger, which, of course, features some excellent specialty burgers. You can find a Bacon Cheeseburger, a Blue Cheese and Black Truffle Burger, and a Roasted Wild Mushroom and Swiss Burger, to name just a few.

There is also a selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and other entrees (like the Pan-Seared Atlantic Salmon, Filet Mignon, and Ribeye.)

The Hyatt also has several ballrooms, which makes it a great location for weddings and other special events.

Airlie is located in Warrenton, VA, which is only about 30 miles from Fairfax, VA. It is close to I-66 and Interstate 29, which makes it convenient to reach from Northern Virginia.

The historic hotel sits on 300 acres and offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful gardens, local gourmet food, and a range of outdoor activities. There is even a working farm, Berkshire Farms, on-site! In fact, much of the food at Airlie comes directly from the farm.

They pride themselves on sustainability and have been named a Historic Hotel of America. The property itself includes a small village and cottages.

There are some great amenities at Airlie. For instance, they have complimentary bikes that you can use and ride around the beautiful, sprawling property. There are also archery classes for anyone over 16 years old, plus fitness classes, a game room, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and a Topgolf Swing Suite to practice your putting.

There is also an outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally) and fire pits.

Airlie has an excellent restaurant on-site called Harry’s. The dining options focus on local farm-to-table fare. Some of the dinner options include flatbreads, burgers, and salads, plus special entrees like Pan Seared Red Snapper, Cajun Shrimp Pasta, and Stuffed Portabello Mushroom.

Harry’s is also open for brunch, where you can find all of your favorites like Smoked Salmon Benedict, Chicken & Waffles, Huevos Rancheros, and Apple Crumble French Toast.

Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast

The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast is located in Hume, VA, which is about 47 miles from Northern Virginia.

The unique property is actually a 4,200-acre cattle ranch. It also has a bed and breakfast where you can stay and surround yourself with the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The property dates all the way back to the early 19th century and is full of historic details. The manor house was actually built in 1814 by James Marshall, who was the brother of famous Supreme Court Justice John Marshall.

There are three main buildings that make up the Bed & Breakfast: the Manor House, the Carriage Rooms, and the Farm House. Many of the rooms contain beautiful historic furnishings and decor, as well as private fireplaces and bathrooms.

To accompany your stay at Marriott Ranch, you’ll also be treated to a delicious “Fairfield Farm” country breakfast each morning.

The ranch is a great place for horse lovers. You can book a guided horseback riding trip as part of your stay.

There are plenty of other activities nearby, including some of my favorite wineries in Virginia (like Narmada Winery and Gray Ghost Vineyards), plus exploring nearby Luray, VA, and Shenandoah National Park.

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center

The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center is actually located in Maryland, but it’s one of the top major resorts in the Washington, D.C. metro area, and so it deserves a spot on this list.

The resort is a beautiful grand building located right near the Potomac River. It’s conveniently located right off of I-495 after you cross over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from Alexandria into Maryland.

One of the centerpieces of the hotel is the stunning 19-story glass atrium, which overlooks the Potomac River.

As the name suggests, the Gaylord is a major convention center. It hosts a wide range of events all year long, including the famous Scripps National Spelling Bee!

I also recommend visiting the Gaylord around the winter holiday season. That’s when you can get a chance to see the very cool (pun intended!) ICE! show, which features elaborate ice sculptures.

The resort itself has some nice amenities, including the full-service Relache Spa, multiple restaurants, including the Old Hickory Steakhouse and Harbor Social; a fun rooftop bar that’s 80’s themed; an indoor pool; and a fitness center.

Another bonus about staying at the Gaylord is that the surrounding area, known as National Harbor, is filled with walkable shops and restaurants, including Tanger National Harbor, which has over 85 designer stores.

You can also go on a memorable ride in the immense Capital Wheel, which is a ferris wheel that dominates the skyline. The Capital Wheel actually has fully enclosed cars, which means you can ride it in comfort all year long. Plus the views of nearby Alexandria, D.C., and the Potomac River are incredible!

You’ll also find the grand MGM at National Harbor just a few minute’s drive away. This resort includes even more amenities, including, of course, a casino, concert venue, restaurants, shops, a full-service spa, and a lovely outdoor pool that’s open seasonally in the summer.
