Sunflower Fields are a gorgeous sight to behold, and they can be a fun, family-friendly experience. The fields are stunningly photogenic, and the perfect backdrop for selfies, photography, picnics, sunsets, or just taking a relaxing nature walk.
There are a number of stunning sunflower fields in Virginia, and this guide will help you find the best ones in the state.

What:
Sunflower Fields in Virginia are typically part of a working farm, and they feature acres of fresh sunflowers (often 20, 30 or more acres of sunflowers) growing in a field, as the name suggests. The peak sunflower bloom period is usually highlighted with a Summer Festival, which typically occur on weekends, and features other special events as well, including Sunflower Mazes, food vendors, ice cream, children’s activities, live music, farm animals, picnic areas, and much more. Many of the farms that feature Sunflower Fields also include wedding venues, Bed and Breakfasts, Pumpkin Patches, and Christmas Tree Farms.

When:
Sunflowers are typically at peak bloom from late Summer to the early Fall season, so this is generally the best time to go out and enjoy them.
Sunflower Fields in Northern Virginia

Auburn Farm Sunflower Patch
What:
Auburn Farm features an annual Sunflower Festival, generally in September. The festival features a corn maze, yard games, food vendors, kids’ activities, flower sales, and pumpkins. The cost is $10 per person, with children 5 and under free.

Burnside Farms
What:
Burnside Farms features events all year round. In the Spring, they host the Festival of Spring for three weeks in April. The event features 200 varieties of tulips and 30+ varieties of daffodils, for an explosion of color to rival the Netherlands.
In the Summer, the farm features The Summer of Sunflowers, which has over 30 varieties of “cutting” sunflowers planted on more than 20 acres. The attraction also features a sunflower maze.
The Summer of Sunflowers also features Sunflower Sunsets events, an opportunity to “pick your own flowers” (sunflowers are $1.50 per stem), and “picnic and play” located at the farm’s 100-year-old dairy barn. More information about all of these Summer events can be found here.
Then, to round things out for the year. Burnside Farms also features Christmas Trees for sale in the Winter.

The Festival of Spring occurs for three weeks in April and varies from year to year. The times are 10am to 6pm on Monday to Friday, and 9am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday.
The Summer of Sunflowers occurs from mid to late July through Labor Day. The times are 10am to 5pm on Monday to Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Sunflower Sunsets are from 5pm to 8pm daily.
Christmas Trees are available starting the day after Thanksgiving. Times are 11am to 7pm on Monday to Friday, and 9am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunflower Fields in Central Virginia

Sunflower Festival at Alvis Farms
What:
Alvis Farms, located outside of Richmond, Virginia, hosts an annual Sunflower Festival. There are 50 acres of sunflowers on the farm. The Festival includes a Sunflower Maze, food trucks, ice cream, flavored ice, burgers, funnel cakes, and more. You can follow them on Facebook or Instagram for updates on the next festival.

Fresh Branch Farm
What:
Fresh Branch Farm is a small family-owned farm in Chesterfield, Virginia. They host an annual Fresh Branch Farm Sunflower Festival every Summer. The cost for admission is $10 per person and $0.50 per flower for a pick-your-own sunflowers event.

Liberty Mills Farm
What:
Liberty Mills Farm features the largest Corn Maze in the country, which is pretty cool! It will be opening for the year from September 10 through November 13. The farm also features flowers and sunflower festivals.
The Flowers on the Farm Festival will be occurring June 24-26. it has no admission fee, but there is a cost of $30 per flower bucket and $15 per flower bouquet. The event also features homemade ice cream, fresh fudge, handmade flower headbands, butterfly kites and garden spinners, local spices, coffee, syrups, jams, salsas, and more.
The Sunflower Festival will be occurring August 28 to 29 and September 4 to 6. Festival event tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children. One sunflower bloom is included with each adult ticket.
Golden Hour (6-8pm on Saturdays) tickets are also available for $15, and must be purchased in advance. Activities and events include: pick-your-own sunflowers; pick-your-own flowers; an outdoor activity area; local vendors selling food, jewelry, and more; a hay ride; music; Farm Market; face painting; and more.
The Blooms and Butterflies Festival will be occurring July 23 to 25 from 10am to 3pm. It includes a “pick your own flowers” event, butterfly release, music, food trucks, hay wagon rides, Farm Market, and an outdoor activity area.
The price for a flower bucket is $25 if purchased in advance ($30 if purchased at the farm), and the price for a flower bouquet is $15 if purchased in advance ($20 if purchased at the farm).
The Strawberry Fest will be occurring on May 28 from 9:30am to 3pm. The event features more activities, including “pick your own strawberries”; a variety of strawberry products to try, including strawberry sundaes and strawberry salsa; plus local vendors and food trucks.

What:
Historic Peace Hill Farm is located on a lovely historic setting. The farm features a Bed and Breakfast, Afternoon Tea, a hen house, and many seasonal events, including a corn maze, Easter Egg Hunt, Sunflower Field, Fall Fiber and Craft Festival, Holiday Tea, Cookies with Santa, Valentine Tea, and more. During the Sunflower season, you can pick three sunflowers for $5.

Gold Petal Farms Virginia
What:
Gold Petal Farms has locations in both Virginia and Maryland. The Virginia location is in Virginia Beach, and it features seasonal sunflower fields, sunflower mazes, and “pick your own flowers” activities. They also feature a number of items for sale on their website, including stickers, pins, activity books, shirts, and more.

Wildwood Farm
What:
Wildwood Farm is a goat and flower farm located outside of Williamsburg, Virginia. It features homemade farm products for sale, such as goat milk peppermint caramel, goat milk soap, and a beard card gift set, and beeswax beard balm.

Sunflower Fields in the Shenandoah Valley Region

Beaver Dam Farm
What:
Beaver Dam Farm, located outside of Roanoke, Virginia, dates back to 1900 and began as a dairy farm in 1927.
The farm hosts an annual Sunflower Festival every late Summer and early Fall, which features 20 acres of black oil sunflowers for visitors to walk through, plus hayrides, farm animal petting area, food vendors, art and crafts, photo booths, live music, and much more.
The farm also features an online Sunflower Store, with bags, black oil sunflower bird seed, coloring books, jewelry and more.

Sinkland Farms
What:
Sinkland Farms is located in Christiansburg, VA, to the southwest of Roanoke. They feature a Sunflower Festival, a Pumpkin Festival, and they host wedding events.
The Sunflower Festival began in 2021, and features eight acres of sunflower fields with over 175,000 blooms, including over 20 varieties of flowers. Activities include food trucks, southern barbeque, kettle corn, ice cream, beer, wine, and more.
They have the distinction of having a pumpkin patch that has been rated number 1 by Virginia Tourism. The Pumpkin Festival lasts for six weekends, and includes hayrides, horseback riding, pony rides, arts and crafts, live music, local vendors, barbeque, ice cream, kettle corn, hot chocolate, cider, local beer, local wine, a maze, farm animals, and much more.

Every Soul Acres
What:
Every Soul Acres (formerly Evergreen Tree Farm) features a “pick-your-own” Sunflower event, a Pumpkin Patch, and a Christmas Tree Farm. For the Sunflower event, photographers can call to make arrangements to come for professional photographs.
The Pumpkin Patch event features kids’ crafts, foods, local artisans/vendors, and more. The Christmas Tree Farm is a specialty at Every Soul Acres. They grow many kinds of trees on the farm, including Concolor Fir, Canaan Fir, Douglas Fir, Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, and White Pine.

Doe Run Farm Virginia
What:
Doe Run Farm is located in the southwestern region of Virginia, not far from the border with North Carolina.
The farm features fall-themed activities for the whole family, including six acres of sunflowers (including “pick-your-own-sunflowers”), a Sunflower Maze, hayrides, bounce pad, apple launcher, a pumpkin patch, pumpkin bowling, swings, slide, corn hole, and more.
There are also seasonal foods like apple pies, fresh produce, pumpkins, peanut butter delight, and more.
