But it also comes at a high price tag. Rooms at the Inn can average $1,200 to over $2,000 a night. And indulging in one of their seven-course tasting menus in The Dining Room can cost more than $475 per person!
So, is it worth it?
My parents recently went there to celebrate their anniversary, and they came back with their full review, which I’m here to pass along to you.
They decided that it was definitely worth it! My mom especially thought that The Inn had definitely earned its great reputation, and that everything from the ambiance, to the food and drinks, to the impeccable service and little details, made the experience one to remember.

While it’s best known for its world-class dining, it’s also an intimate inn, a culinary destination, and honestly… more like a refined spa-like retreat for food lovers.
You can stay overnight at the inn, dine at the 3-star Michelin-rated restaurant, or do both for a truly memorable experience. Each room at the inn has its own distinctive décor and charm, from cozy superior rooms to elaborate suites in historic buildings.
It’s located about 52 miles west of Northern Virginia, and it’s probably the most famous restaurant in the commonwealth.
This is the kind of place people save for milestone moments, anniversaries, once-in-a-lifetime celebrations, or “we’ve always wanted to do this” trips.
First Impressions & Arrival Experience
One thing my parents emphasized over and over was that the experience begins the second you arrive.
From the moment they pulled in, valet service was ready and waiting. Someone immediately took their bags up to their room, no front desk chaos, no awkward waiting. Instead, they were personally greeted and escorted through the property.
Their greeter gave them a full tour of the Inn: the dining room, the atrium, and eventually the bar, where they were welcomed with a special cocktail, something light and refreshing, similar to a spritz. It felt celebratory and relaxing right away.
Only after that did he walk them up to their room… where their bags were already perfectly placed and waiting.
That level of choreography and attention to detail really set the tone.
Dinner at The Inn at Little Washington
Before dinner, they spent time in the Monkey Room, which my mom absolutely loved. It’s whimsical, elegant, and just a little bit playful – with mirrors, bright, fanciful wallpaper, and a cozy but lively atmosphere that invites you to relax and enjoy a drink before the evening unfolds.
It’s formal, yes, but not stiff. More delightfully indulgent than intimidating.
Dinner itself was a multi-course experience, with each dish being small, intentional, and exquisitely prepared. Nothing felt heavy or overwhelming, just beautifully balanced.
Some highlights included:
- Lobster with an airy foam
- Duck, cooked to perfection
- A steady progression of dishes that felt thoughtful rather than excessive
One of the most memorable touches? A woman walks around the dining room with a bread cart, allowing you to choose your own fresh loaves – warm, fragrant, and beautifully presented.
Every detail felt purposeful, from the pacing of the meal to the way each course was explained and served.
Rooms, Service, and Thoughtful Details
The attention to detail didn’t stop at dinner.
When my parents stepped out of their room, staff quietly came in and neatly put everything back in place, making the room feel freshly reset when they returned.
My parents also noticed:
- A special Inn at Little Washington bookmark tucked into a book
- After-dinner drinks and cookies waiting in the room
- A charming keepsake cardboard replica of the Inn, filled with chocolates, left as a souvenir to take home
These little moments were what really made the experience feel personal and memorable.
Breakfast, Grounds, and Amenities
Breakfast was another standout.
It takes place in a sun-filled atrium, almost like a greenhouse, with windows all around and overhead. Each table has an umbrella to soften the sunlight, and there’s a beautiful white peacock statue on display that adds to the elegance.
Breakfast included:
- A fresh smoothie flight
- A basket overflowing with breads and croissants to choose from
It felt leisurely, peaceful, and indulgent – the kind of breakfast you linger over.
The Inn’s grounds are just as lovely as the interior. Guests can take a walking tour of the gardens, which include:
- Beautiful landscaping and flowers
- A koi pond
- Quiet, serene paths perfect for a slow stroll
There’s also a separate building with a gift shop, featuring:
- Crystal and silverware
- Christmas ornaments
- Dish towels
- A baseball cap with the Inn’s swan logo
It’s upscale, but tasteful – more “beautiful keepsake” than touristy souvenirs.
Is The Inn at Little Washington Worth It? Final Verdict
For my parents, the answer was an enthusiastic yes!
They felt that The Inn at Little Washington had truly earned its reputation, not just because of the food, but because every single detail was considered. From service and ambiance to the thoughtful surprises and peaceful setting, the entire stay felt like a refined retreat.
My mom described it as feeling less like “going out to dinner” and more like a luxury spa experience built around exceptional food.
